Djanet, Tassili n'Ajjer
This arid high plateau is located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters and stretches 670 km from northwest to southeast and about 200 km from northeast to southwest, covering an area of nearly 72,000 km². Across its surface, rock formations shaped by erosion rise from the sand dunes, resembling the ruins of ancient cities from afar. Illizi lies at the foot of the northern slope, while Djanet is on the southwestern edge.

The Tassili n’Ajjer reaches a peak of 2,158 meters at Adrar Afao and emerges as high cliffs averaging 1,500 meters above the ergs of Mourzouq and Oubari to the east and Admer in the Ténéré to the south. To the north, the plateau fades into the dunes of Issaouane and Bourharet.

The landscape of Tassili n’Ajjer is particularly rugged: vast rocky plains, occasionally interrupted by "forests" of monoliths, are carved with akbas (crevices in the escarpments accessible only on foot or by camel) as well as numerous faults and canyons. Some of these canyons contain guelta, natural water basins fed by the rare but intense storms that erode the desert every two to three years.

The massif is inhabited by the Tuaregs of the Kel Ajjer group. Its main town is Djanet, a small oasis on the western edge of the region.
